Proper cosmetic post-treatment care helps results last longer. After procedures, skin barrier repair is essential as it becomes temporarily vulnerable. For all treatments, whether you’re following Botox aftercare, filler aftercare, or post-microneedling recovery, the first 72 hours following your treatment is the most important.
At Vi Beauty Lab, we recommend our patients stick to their facial regimen as a means of not just maintaining, but enhancing their results. We provide personalized aftercare instructions so your routine is not guesswork but a clear, actionable plan that protects and prolongs your results. At the same time, we teach our clients how regenerative techniques can support lasting results.
Why Aftercare Determines Your Results
The first 72 hours set the tone
Immediately following any cosmetic procedure, the skin becomes more sensitive. Micro-inflammation is at its peak, capillaries are sensitive, and the skin’s barrier is broken down. How you care for your skin in these first hours impacts comfort, smoothness, and longevity.
Personalized guidance matters
Personalized instructions for your unique procedure take the guesswork out of your post-op care. Understanding what to do and what not to do minimizes the risk of post-op complications and allows you to feel great as your skin heals. Whether it’s Sculptra aftercare, PRP aftercare, or microneedling aftercare, our clear, step-by-step instructions are designed to ensure your body has what it needs to do what it does best: heal, repair, and restore.

What Happens in the First 72 Hours
Hours 0-24
Your skin has reached peak inflammation immediately. Blood vessels are dilated and the barrier is compromised. The main goals are to keep the skin clean, hydrated and to avoid any manipulation of the treated area. Avoid touching, massaging, or applying actives.
Hours 24-48
Swelling can reach its peak at this point if it hasn’t already, especially after injectables. Your skin can feel especially dry or tight after microneedling or energy-based devices. Swelling and bruising care includes cool compresses, if recommended. Light moisturizers support skin barrier repair and continue the use of daily SPF after procedures.
Hours 48-72
Redness is usually subsiding at this point, and the skin barrier is beginning to normalize. It’s okay to introduce a light, inactive moisturizer to the skin. Actives such as retinoids, acids, or exfoliating products should still be avoided.
How Small Habits Compound Outcomes
Sleep
Elevating your head slightly while sleeping on your back will help decrease puffiness and prevent imprint lines.
Sun Protection
Daily SPF after procedures protects results and prevents hyperpigmentation.
Skincare and Lifestyle
Avoid hot water, scrubs, and harsh detergents on towels and pillowcases. Alcohol, saunas, steam, and intense exercise will increase swelling and/or redness so be mindful of timing and moderation.

Fillers (Hyaluronic Acid and Others)
- Swelling and minor bruising peak at 24-48 hours
- Use brief, clean, cool compresses if advised; avoid pressure or massage unless instructed
- Postpone exercise, saunas, and very salty foods for 24-48 hours
- Makeup can resume once skin looks sealed, usually the next day
- Lips settle in two to four weeks; structural areas in two to six weeks
Sculptra (Poly-L-Lactic Acid)
- Follow the 5-5-5 massage rule if instructed: 5 minutes, 5 times daily, for 5 days
- Avoid intense heat and high-impact exercise for at least 24 hours
- Pause strong actives until cleared for even collagen remodeling
Microneedling (With or Without PRP/RF)
- First 24 hours: no makeup, no active skincare; gentle cleanse and basic hydration only
- Avoid sun, heat, and sweat; switch to a clean pillowcase
- Days two to three: continue SPF, light hydration; avoid activities
- Gradually reintroduce actives once skin is calm
Skin Barrier First: Products to Press Pause On and What to Use
- Retinoids (tretinoin/retinol), acids (AHA/BHA/PHA), benzoyl peroxide, high-dose vitamin C, exfoliating masks, scrubs, cleansing brushes, peels, essential oils, fragranced products
- Use a gentle, low-foam, fragrance-free cleanser
- Moisturizers should be fragrance-free, non-comedogenic, and packed with ceramides to support skin barrier repair
Lifestyle Habits That Speed Recovery
- Sleep seven to nine hours, back-sleeping with slight elevation
- Drink adequate water, eat protein and colorful produce; moderate sodium intake to reduce puffiness
- Pause workouts, saunas, and heat for 24-48 hours
- Daily SPF after procedures, shade, hats, sunglasses; avoid midday exposure during early days
Timelines, Touch-ups, and Long-Term Plans
- Neurotoxins: Results appear in three to seven days; maintain every three to four months
- Fillers: Settling occurs in two to four weeks for lips, approximately two to six weeks for structure; reassess symmetry after swelling resolves
- Sculptra: Collagen gains over months; plan an annual review for upkeep
- Microneedling: Glow appears in one to two weeks; results build with sessions
- Stacking Strategy: Space energy-based treatments from filler dates; anchor routine with barrier-first care and consistent daily SPF
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Over-treating too soon with actives or stacking procedures
- Touching or massaging treated areas without guidance
- Skipping SPF or using hot water and harsh cleansers early on
- Mixing advice that conflicts with your personalized plan
- Using old or unclean makeup tools
FAQs About Post-Treatment Care
Why is post-treatment care important after injectables or microneedling?
The skin and underlying tissues are temporarily reactive. Calm, protected care reduces complications, supports collagen, and extends results.
Can makeup be worn the day after microneedling or Botox?
Botox often allows makeup the next day if entry points are closed; microneedling generally requires 24 hours makeup-free.

Swelling and bruising care after fillers – how long does it last?
Minor swelling peaks at 24-48 hours and resolves over several days; small bruises can last up to a week.
What products should be avoided right after energy-based treatments?
Retinoids, acids, scrubs, high-dose vitamin C, essential oils, and cleansing devices should all be avoided. Stick to gentle cleansers, fragrance-free moisturizers, and daily SPF until cleared.
What’s normal vs. not normal after a treatment and when to call your provider?
Normal: Mild warmth, redness, puffiness, pinpoint dryness.
Not normal: Severe/worsening pain, spreading hot redness, thick discharge, hives, vision changes.
What is the Sculptra massage rule and why does it matter?
The 5-5-5 rule helps distribute product evenly, supporting smooth collagen stimulation and reducing uneven texture.
How soon can exercise, sauna, or sun exposure resume?
Stay away from heat and exercise for 24-48 hours; sun avoidance is immediate. Personalized guidance may extend these windows.
How does good aftercare affect longevity of results?
Reduced flare-ups, controlled swelling, consistent SPF, and barrier-friendly routines help results settle predictably, spacing touch-ups, and prolonging benefits.
